Candide 8 - Discussion Chapters 19 to 25

"he is disgusted with everything he possesses...the best stomachs are not those that reject all food."

Candide 8 - Discussion (Chapters 19 to 25) :   Though the previous lesson's Group Work covered all the way to Chapter 24 - sometimes (though not often in my class) I feel it is important to go over some ideas and text that are either not covered in the Group Work OR are so important that they need a second (whole class) look.  Also, Chapter 25 is so important with Count Pococurante AND also we get a wonderful differentiation in Martin (who becomes to my mind - the most complex character in the novel).

Lesson Overview

So this discussion will go over the important parts of the earlier chapters (20-24) to see if they got the idea - on their own or in their groups.  In addition, there are some important ideas that were not covered in the group work that the discussion will cover.  There is also the very personal idea of Candide betraying his beloved Cunegonde - and I always want to see the students' reaction to it - both in their reading and how they feel as a class. See earlier discussions for more information and/or my page on class discussions.
Here are just a few of the big ideas covered in this discussion (see my lesson notes for more)
pointing the finger at ourselves for acts that require evil deeds (eating sugar & slavery)

My Lesson Notes & a sample reading page

See above for instructions - the text with my notes served as a guide for the questions, comments and ideas that I ask - though I was always ready for and often elicited the students ideas, questions, etc.  Over the years - as I wrote notes in this text - the previous years' notes and questions become incorporated into the lesson.  Again - you will find that these instructions are flexible - and I had to be - they kept changing the amount of time that we had in the classroom.

What's Next - UNIT HOMEPAGE

Candide Day 9  - Chapters 21 to 28 - Three Paths to Understanding.   Two very different Group Works and a Row Reading Discussion to bring students up to the brink of the last lesson on this novel.

WHAT CAME BEFORE:

Candide Day 7 - Group Work Chapters 20 to 24

Thoughts on the Lesson

A lot of overlap here with the Group Work - but it is a short book, requiring only a few weeks to complete - and there are definitely some sections that require going over - and some chapters, small though they may be, that need a very thorough discussion.
